As a former police officer for the University of Georgia I lost count of the number of ON CAMPUS armed robberies I responded to over the year. On more than one occasion our detectives interviewed suspects and many of them openly admitted that they targeted students becuase they know that they are totally unarmed. They knew that students cant even carry a pocket knife while on campus and that they carry cash and credit cards which are rich for the taking. UGA has more than one large high crime, high drug housing project just feet from campus.
Whats more disturning is the chief of police forces his officer to arrest students for the most minor of violations under the "weapons on school grounds law". On more than one occasion I was forced by a supervisor to make a felony arrest for an Airsoft gun or a slingshot. In almost all of these cases the weapons werent even being used at all much less for an illegal purpose. Some of my fellow officers and I conviced the local magistrate judges to stop signing these warrants which we were forced to apply for and while some did others refused and still allow an 18 year old with a 3 inch pocket knife in their dorm room to be charged with a felony and be kicked out of school. I see no reason why a 58 year old professor with a carry permit not be allowed to carry CONCEALED! We had a campus with over 250 buildings and daytime population of well over 50,000 people!! BUT ONLY 4 PATROL CARS WERE ALLOWED TO BE USED TO PATROL THE CAMPUS AT ANY ONE TIME BECUASE THE PRESIDENT DOESNT WANT AN "OVERBEARING" POLICE DEPARTMENT. Law enforcement at UGA is a joke, officers are discouraged from being proactive and going out to try and stop these in progress felony robberies and entering autos. UGA officers arent even allowed to carry a baton becuase the president and chief are more concerned about appearances than an officer being able to defend himself from an attack.
I once interupted an armed robbery in progress and the supervisor FORCED me to let the robber go because the complainant had been drinking and was underage EVEN THOUGH HE WAS THE VICTIM OF AN ARMED ROBBERY. I was very close to shooting this guy when he decided to stop and drop hios knife, yet UGA police let him go and he was never arrested.
This law needs to be changed to allow carry on campus. Yeah most students arent 21 but those of us who are and those staff and faculty who wish to protect themselves should be able to.

[...] College students with Georgia firearms licenses should not be subjected to a felony for carrying a pistol on campus. This gun ban law treats even 57 year old doctoral candidates as if they are “children,” simply because they are students. It is obvious that this felony law does nothing to deter real felons, as evidenced by this armed robber and the armed criminals involved in the crime spree in September. Gun bans disarm only those inclined not to commit crimes, who are then left at the mercy of those who disregard such bans.
Crime is on the rise. The criminals have figured out the system and they know that the payoff versus the penalty is better. I suggest citizen patrols. If we can organize the communities to go outside, and stop hiding in their homes, which does no good as they will invade your home, we can make a difference. Now if those groups are armed, and have training, the criminals will avoid them. Liberals have created an entire society of compliant non resistant people by infecting the schools with the "Don't Fight Back" mentality and mantra. The liberal school mentality punishes the victim for defending them self, and the perp just spends a few more days in suspension with his thug buddies bragging about how he got away again.

FIGHT BACK! That should be the motto chanted. FIGHT BACK! make it difficult for the criminal to obtain anything of value. Fighting back can start with being vigilant in your life, look around, be alert, because you can bet that thug is watching you very intently. If he notices you paying attention he is going to go pick on someone else. Hopefully some mamby pamby liberal.

CARRY A GUN. it should be the last resort, but when the time comes, follow the words of Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch, Shoot until the threat goes away. Then call the NRA, and if you aren't a member, join now as fast as you can. If you have to shoot, be aware that the liberal mindset will want you to be the criminal. You will become the target of a deeper investigation than the repeat offender you just killed. Yes Killed, if you are not going to shoot to kill then don't bother to shoot. The criminal has no concern for you, your life or your family. They will of course stand before a judge and blame society, the school system, their parents, culture etc. They never take responsibility for their own actions. SO if you have to pull your weapon, then make it count, and do not speak to anyone until you speak to an NRA attorney.

The recent events and response should demostrate the end results of government protection of citizens. Which is, no protection at all. Not unless the campuss is going to provide a police officer or security gaurd for each and every student. I serously doubt if they're going to do. Therefor, the first responder or citizen, should has a right to protect themselves from harm. And, should not be legislated out of that right. GA Tech and GSU is only providing a campus of possible victims.
